209             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish

211             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
212             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
213             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
214             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

216             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
217             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
218             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
219             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
220             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
221             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
222             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
223             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
224             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
225             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
226             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
227             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
228             GPG encryption."</i>
229           <p class="text-justify">
230             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
231             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
232             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
233             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
234             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
235             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
236             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
237             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
238           <p class="text-justify">
239             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
240             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
241             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
242             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
243             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
244             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
245             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
246             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

262             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
263             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

265             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
266             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
267             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
268             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
269             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
270             and
271             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
272             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
273             security token.

275             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
276             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
277             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
278             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
279             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
280             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
281             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

283             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
284               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
285               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if

299             understand the various concepts, the important security
300             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
301             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
302             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
303             for for enthusiasts.

305             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
306             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
307             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
308             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
309             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
310             contribute to
311             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
312             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
313             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
314             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
315             new version of macOS is released.

317             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
318             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
319             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
320             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
321             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
322             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
323             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
324             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
