201             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
202             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
203             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

205             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
206             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
207             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
208             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
209             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
210             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
211             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
212             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
213             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
214             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
215             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
216             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
217             GPG encryption."</i>

219             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
220             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
221             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
222             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
223             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
224             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
225             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
226             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
227           <p class="text-justify">
228             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
229             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
230             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
231             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
232             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
233             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
234             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
235             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

251             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
252             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

255             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
256             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
257             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
258             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,

260             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
261             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
262             security token.

264             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
265             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
266             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
267             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
268             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
269             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
270             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

272             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments

288             understand the various concepts, the important security
289             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
290             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
291             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
292             for for enthusiasts.

294             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
295             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
296             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
297             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
298             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
299             contribute to
300             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
301             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
302             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
303             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
304             new version of macOS is released.

306             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
307             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
308             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
309             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
310             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
311             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
312             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
313             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
