206             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
207             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
208             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

210             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
211             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
212             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
213             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
214             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
215             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
216             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
217             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
218             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
219             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
220             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
221             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
222             GPG encryption."</i>

224             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
225             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
226             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
227             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
228             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
229             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
230             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
231             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
232           <p class="text-justify">
233             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
234             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
235             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
236             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
237             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
238             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
239             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
240             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

263             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,

265             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
266             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware

269             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
270             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
271             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
272             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
273             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
274             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
275             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

277             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments

294             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security

300             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
301             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
302             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
303             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to

305             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
306             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
307             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
308             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
309             new version of macOS is released.

311             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
312             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
313             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
314             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to

316             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
317             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
318             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
