196             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
197             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
198             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
199             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
200             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
201             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
202             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

204             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
205             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
206             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
207             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
208             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
209             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
210             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
211             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
212             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
213             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
214             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
215             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
216             GPG encryption."</i>
217           <p class="text-justify">
218             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
219             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
220             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
221             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
222             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
223             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
224             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
225             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
226           <p class="text-justify">
227             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
228             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
229             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
230             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
231             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
232             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
233             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
234             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

250             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
251             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
252             instance, we've worked
253             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
254             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
255             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
256             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
257             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
258             and
259             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
260             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
261             security token.

263             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
264             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
265             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
266             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
267             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
268             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
269             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

271             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
272               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

286             integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need to
287             understand the various concepts, the important security
288             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
289             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
290             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
291             for for enthusiasts.

293             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
294             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
295             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
296             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
297             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
298             contribute to
299             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
300             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
301             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
302             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
303             new version of macOS is released.

305             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
306             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
307             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
308             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
309             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
310             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
311             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
312             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
