190             "It's about your sources and what happens to them when you
191             leave the country and you publish that explosive story and
192             the government is looking for the whistleblower that
193             handed you that key piece of information."</i>  And
194             famously, GnuPG was Edward Snowden's tool of choice to
195             securely communicate with journalists about the NSA mass
196             surveillance leaks.

198             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
199             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
200             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
201             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
202             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
203             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
204             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
205             class="camp-headshot pull-right">, Vice-President of
206             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
207             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
208             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
209             GPG encryption."</i>
210           <p class="text-justify">
211             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
212             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
213             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
214             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
215             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
216             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
217             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
218             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
219           <p class="text-justify">
220             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
221             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
222             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
223             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
224             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
225             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
226             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
227             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

235             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
236             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
237             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
238             instance, we've worked
239             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
240             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
241             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
242             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
243             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
244             and
245             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
246             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
247             security token.

249             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
250             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
251             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
252             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
253             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
254             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
255             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

257             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
258               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

272             integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need to
273             understand the various concepts, the important security
274             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
275             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
276             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
277             for for enthusiasts.

279             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
280             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
281             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
282             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
283             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
284             contribute to
285             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
286             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
287             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
288             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
289             new version of macOS is released.

291             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
292             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
293             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
294             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
295             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
296             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
297             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
298             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
