192             famously, GnuPG was Edward Snowden's tool of choice to
193             securely communicate with journalists about the NSA mass
194             surveillance leaks.

196             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
197             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
198             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
199             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
200             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
201             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
202             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
203             class="camp-headshot pull-right">, Vice-President of
204             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
205             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
206             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
207             GPG encryption."</i>
208           <p class="text-justify">
209             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
210             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
211             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
212             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
213             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
214             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
215             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
216             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
217           <p class="text-justify">
218             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
219             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
220             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
221             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
222             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
223             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
224             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
225             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

233             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
234             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
235             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
236             instance, we've worked
237             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
238             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
239             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
240             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
241             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
242             and
243             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
244             GnuK project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
245             security token.

247             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
248             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
249             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
250             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
251             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
252             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
253             recurring donations and not one-time donations, like last
254             time.

256             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
257               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

270             GnuPG," which has three principle audiences: developers
271             who want to integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need
272             to understand the various concepts, the important security
273             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; digital security trainers
274             who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make sound
275             recommendations to users; and, of course, enthusiasts.

277             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
278             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
279             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
280             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
281             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
282             contribute to is GPG Tools, which many activists and
283             journalists rely on to secure their online communication.
284             We want to make sure that GPG integration in Apple's
285             mailer is supported as soon as a new version of macOS is
286             released.

288             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
289             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
290             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
291             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
292             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
293             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
294             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
295             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
