254             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
255             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
256             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
257             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
258             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
259             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
260             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

262             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
263             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
264             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
265             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
266             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
267             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
268             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
269             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
270             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
271             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
272             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
273             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
274             GPG encryption."</i>

276             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
277             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
278             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
279             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
280             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
281             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
282             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
283             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
284           <p class="text-justify">
285             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
286             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
287             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
288             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
289             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
290             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
291             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundation each committed
292             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

307             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
308             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

310             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
311             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
312             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
313             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
314             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
315             and
316             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
317             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
318             security token.

320             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
321             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
322             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
323             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
324             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
325             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
326             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

328             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
329               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

344             understand the various concepts, the important security
345             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
346             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
347             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
348             for for enthusiasts.

350             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
351             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
352             10 Euros each month, then we intend to grow the
353             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
354             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to

356             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
357             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
358             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
