248             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
249             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
250             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
251             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
252             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
253             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
254             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

256             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
257             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
258             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
259             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
260             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
261             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
262             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
263             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
264             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
265             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
266             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
267             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
268             GPG encryption."</i>
269           <p class="text-justify">
270             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
271             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
272             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
273             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
274             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
275             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
276             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
277             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
278           <p class="text-justify">
279             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
280             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
281             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
282             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
283             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
284             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
285             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
286             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

301             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
302             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

304             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
305             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
306             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
307             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
308             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
309             and
310             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
311             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
312             security token.

314             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
315             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
316             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
317             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
318             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
319             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
320             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

322             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
323               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
324               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if
325               just 2000&nbsp;people donate 5 or 10 euros each month,
326               the equivalent of just 2 or 3 cups of coffee.

338             understand the various concepts, the important security
339             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
340             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
341             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
342             for for enthusiasts.

344             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
345             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
346             10 Euros each month, then we intend to grow the
347             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
348             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to

350             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
351             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
352             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
353             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a

356             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
357             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
358             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
359             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to

361             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
362             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
363             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
