253             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish

255             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
256             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
257             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
258             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

260             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
261             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
262             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
263             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
264             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
265             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
266             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
267             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
268             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
269             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
270             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
271             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
272             GPG encryption."</i>

274             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
275             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
276             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
277             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
278             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
279             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
280             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
281             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
282           <p class="text-justify">
283             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
284             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
285             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
286             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
287             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
288             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
289             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
290             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

305             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
306             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

308             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
309             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
310             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
311             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
312             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
313             and
314             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
315             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
316             security token.

318             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
319             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
320             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
321             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
322             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
323             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
324             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

326             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
327               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
328               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if

342             understand the various concepts, the important security
343             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
344             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
345             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
346             for for enthusiasts.

348             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
349             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
350             10 Euros each month, then we intend to grow the
351             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
352             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to

354             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
355             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
356             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
357             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a

361             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
362             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting

365             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
366             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
