267             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
268             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
269             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
270             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
271             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
272             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
273             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

275             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
276             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
277             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
278             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
279             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
280             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
281             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
282             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
283             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
284             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
285             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
286             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
287             GPG encryption."</i>

289             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
290             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
291             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
292             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
293             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
294             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
295             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
296             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
297           <p class="text-justify">
298             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
299             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
300             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
301             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
302             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
303             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
304             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundation each committed
305             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

321             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

324             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
325             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
326             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
327             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
328             and
329             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
330             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
331             security token.

333             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
334             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
335             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
336             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
337             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
338             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
339             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

341             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
342               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
343               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if

356             integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need to
357             understand the various concepts, the important security
358             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
359             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
360             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
361             for enthusiasts.

363             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
364             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
365             10 euros each month, then we intend to grow the
366             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
367             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
368             contribute to
369             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
370             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
371             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
372             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
373             new version of macOS is released.

376             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
