191             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
192             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
193             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
194             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
195             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
196             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
197             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

199             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
200             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
201             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
202             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
203             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
204             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
205             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
206             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
207             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
208             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
209             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
210             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
211             GPG encryption."</i>
212           <p class="text-justify">
213             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
214             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
215             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
216             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
217             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
218             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
219             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
220             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
221           <p class="text-justify">
222             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
223             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
224             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
225             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
226             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
227             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
228             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
229             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

237             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
238             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
239             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
240             instance, we've worked
241             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
242             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
243             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
244             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
245             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
246             and
247             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
248             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
249             security token.

251             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
252             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
253             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
254             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
255             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
256             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
257             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

259             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
260               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
261               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if
262               just 2000&nbsp;people donate 5 or 10 euros each month,
263               the equivalent of just 2 or 3 cups of coffee.

271             work on the Gnuk security token.  And, one new project
272             that it will support is a book called "An Advanced
273             Introduction to GnuPG."  A book for developers who want to
274             integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need to
275             understand the various concepts, the important security
276             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
277             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
278             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
279             for for enthusiasts.

281             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
282             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
283             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
284             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
285             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
286             contribute to
287             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
288             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
289             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
290             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
291             new version of macOS is released.

293             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
294             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
295             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
296             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
297             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
298             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
299             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
300             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
