195             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
196             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
197             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
198             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
199             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
200             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
201             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

203             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
204             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
205             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
206             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
207             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
208             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
209             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.png"
210             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
211             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
212             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
213             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
214             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
215             GPG encryption."</i>
216           <p class="text-justify">
217             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
218             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
219             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
220             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
221             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
222             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
223             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
224             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
225           <p class="text-justify">
226             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
227             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
228             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
229             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
230             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
231             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
232             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
233             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

241             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
242             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
243             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
244             instance, we've worked
245             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
246             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
247             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
248             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
249             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
250             and
251             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
252             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
253             security token.

255             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
256             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
257             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
258             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
259             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
260             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
261             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

263             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
264               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
265               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if
266               just 2000&nbsp;people donate 5 or 10 euros each month,
267               the equivalent of just 2 or 3 cups of coffee.

275             work on the Gnuk security token.  And, one new project
276             that it will support is a book called "An Advanced
277             Introduction to GnuPG."  A book for developers who want to
278             integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need to
279             understand the various concepts, the important security
280             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
281             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
282             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
283             for for enthusiasts.

285             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
286             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
287             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
288             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
289             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
290             contribute to
291             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
292             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
293             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
294             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
295             new version of macOS is released.

297             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
298             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
299             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
300             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
301             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
302             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
303             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
304             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
