211             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
212             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
213             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
214             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
215             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
216             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
217             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

219             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
220             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
221             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
222             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
223             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
224             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
225             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
226             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
227             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
228             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
229             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
230             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
231             GPG encryption."</i>
232           <p class="text-justify">
233             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
234             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
235             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
236             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
237             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
238             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
239             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
240             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
241           <p class="text-justify">
242             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
243             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
244             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
245             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
246             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
247             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
248             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
249             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

266             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

269             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
270             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
271             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
272             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,

274             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
275             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
276             security token.

278             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
279             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
280             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
281             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
282             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
283             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
284             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

286             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
287               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to
288               fund 3 developers</strong>.  We can reach this goal if

302             understand the various concepts, the important security
303             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
304             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
305             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
306             for for enthusiasts.

308             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
309             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
310             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
311             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
312             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
313             contribute to
314             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
315             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
316             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
317             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
318             new version of macOS is released.

320             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
321             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
322             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
323             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
324             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
325             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
326             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
327             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
