212             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
213             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
214             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
215             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
216             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
217             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
218             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

220             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
221             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
222             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
223             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
224             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
225             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
226             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
227             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
228             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
229             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
230             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
231             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
232             GPG encryption."</i>
233           <p class="text-justify">
234             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
235             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
236             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
237             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
238             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
239             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
240             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
241             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
242           <p class="text-justify">
243             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
244             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
245             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
246             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
247             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
248             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
249             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
250             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

267             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

270             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
271             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
272             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
273             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
274             and
275             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
276             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
277             security token.

279             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
280             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
281             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
282             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
283             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
284             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
285             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

287             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
288               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

303             understand the various concepts, the important security
304             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
305             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
306             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
307             for for enthusiasts.

309             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
310             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
311             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
312             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
313             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
314             contribute to
315             is <a href="https://gpgtools.org/">GPGTools</a>, which
316             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
317             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
318             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
319             new version of macOS is released.

321             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
322             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
323             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
324             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to

326             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
327             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
328             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
