249             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish

252             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
253             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
254             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

256             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
257             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
258             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
259             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
260             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
261             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
262             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
263             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
264             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
265             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
266             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
267             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
268             GPG encryption."</i>

270             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
271             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
272             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
273             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
274             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
275             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
276             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
277             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
278           <p class="text-justify">
279             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
280             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
281             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
282             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
283             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
284             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
285             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
286             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

303             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

306             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
307             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
308             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
309             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,

311             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
312             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware

315             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
316             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
317             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
318             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
319             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
320             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
321             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

323             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments

340             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
341             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
342             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,

345             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
346             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
347             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
348             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the

352             many activists and journalists rely on to secure their
353             online communication.  We want to make sure that GPG
354             integration in Apple's mailer is supported as soon as a
