187             "It's about your sources and what happens to them when you
188             leave the country and you publish that explosive story and
189             the government is looking for the whistleblower that
190             handed you that key piece of information."</i>  And
191             famously, GnuPG was Edward Snowden's tool of choice to
192             securely communicate with journalists about the NSA mass
193             surveillance leaks.

195             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
196             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
197             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
198             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
199             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
200             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
201             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
202             class="camp-headshot pull-right">, Vice-President of
203             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
204             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
205             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
206             GPG encryption."</i>
207           <p class="text-justify">
208             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
209             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
210             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
211             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
212             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
213             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
214             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
215             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
216           <p class="text-justify">
217             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
218             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
219             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
220             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
221             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
222             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
223             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
224             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

232             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
233             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
234             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
235             instance, we've worked
236             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
237             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
238             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
239             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
240             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
241             and
242             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
243             GnuK project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
244             security token.

246             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
247             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
248             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
249             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
250             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
251             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
252             recurring donations and not one-time donations, like last
253             time.

255             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments

268             will enable is a book called "An Advanced Introduction to
269             GnuPG," which has three principle audiences: developers
270             who want to integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need
271             to understand the various concepts, the important security
272             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; digital security trainers
273             who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make sound
274             recommendations to users; and, of course, enthusiasts.

276             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
277             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
278             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
279             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
280             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
281             contribute to is GPG Tools, which many activists and
282             journalists rely on to secure their online communication.
283             We want to make sure that GPG integration in Apple's
284             mailer is supported as soon as a new version of macOS is
285             released.

287             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
288             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
289             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
290             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to
291             protect their communication, and some lawyers speaking
292             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
293             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
294             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
