193             famously, GnuPG was Edward Snowden's tool of choice to
194             securely communicate with journalists about the NSA mass
195             surveillance leaks.

197             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
198             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
199             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
200             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
201             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
202             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
203             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
204             class="camp-headshot pull-right">, Vice-President of
205             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
206             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
207             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
208             GPG encryption."</i>
209           <p class="text-justify">
210             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
211             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
212             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
213             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
214             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
215             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
216             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
217             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
218           <p class="text-justify">
219             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
220             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
221             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
222             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
223             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
224             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
225             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundatation each committed
226             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

234             grow the team again.</strong>  To date, he has hired 5
235             developers, and the past two years have seen a number of
236             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For
237             instance, we've worked
238             on <a href="https://www.gnupg.org/blog/20160830-web-key-service.html">simplifying
239             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
240             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python
241             bindings for GPG</a>, contributed some improvements
242             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,
243             and
244             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
245             GnuK project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware
246             security token.

248             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
249             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
250             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
251             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
252             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
253             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
254             recurring donations and not one-time donations, like last
255             time.

272             who want to integrate GnuPG into their programs, and need
273             to understand the various concepts, the important security
274             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; digital security trainers
275             who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make sound
276             recommendations to users; and, of course, enthusiasts.

278             <strong>Our stretch goal is to double this number of
279             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or
280             10 Euros each month, then we will continue to grow the
281             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
282             GnuPG ecosystem.  One project that we really want to
283             contribute to is GPG Tools, which many activists and
284             journalists rely on to secure their online communication.
285             We want to make sure that GPG integration in Apple's
286             mailer is supported as soon as a new version of macOS is
287             released.

289             Now, maybe you don't use GnuPG to encrypt your email.
290             Nevertheless, some journalists whose work you value rely
291             on GnuPG to protect their sources, some activists fighting
292             for a cause that you sympathize with rely on GnuPG to

294             with their clients rely on GnuPG to help protect
295             attorney-client conversations.  And, free software-based
296             operating systems use GnuPG to verify software updates.
