263             on using GPG.</strong>  "It's about your sources and what
264             happens to them when you leave the country and you publish
265             that explosive story and the government is looking for the
266             whistleblower that handed you that key piece of
267             information."</i>  And famously, GnuPG was Edward
268             Snowden's tool of choice to securely communicate with
269             journalists about the NSA mass surveillance leaks.

271             But, GnuPG is not only used to encrypt
272             email.  <strong>GnuPG protects software updates</strong>
273             for nearly all free software operating systems, which
274             power <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Market_share_and_uptake">two-thirds
275             of all servers on the Internet</a>.  And, GnuPG is widely
276             used by organizations and companies.  For instance, Arthur
277             Jordan<img src="/share/campaign/img/headshots/arthur-jordan.jpg"
278             alt="Picture of Arthur Jordan"
279             class="camp-headshot pull-left">, Vice-President of
280             Information Technology at 2U, told us:
281             <i>"when we reached out to universities about how they
282             wanted to do secure file transfer, they were already using
283             GPG encryption."</i>
284           <p class="text-justify">
285             Yet, despite the critical role that GnuPG plays for
286             journalists, activists, and lawyers in particular as well
287             as anyone who uses the Internet in general, in 2012 GnuPG
288             had a <strong>funding crisis</strong>.  Due to a lack of
289             contracts, Werner Koch, GnuPG's lead developer, was forced
290             to lay off the only other person working on GnuPG
291             full-time.  And, by 2014, Werner had to take side jobs
292             unrelated to GnuPG to supplement his income.
293           <p class="text-justify">
294             The situation looked so bad that <strong>Werner was ready
295             to give up.  But, friends convinced him to give a donation
296             campaign one last shot.</strong>  The response was
297             amazing.  Not only did he receive enough money to fund
298             himself, but <strong>he pulled in
299             250&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros in small donations</strong>, and
300             Stripe, Facebook and the Linux Foundation each committed
301             to donating about 50&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per year.

317             improvements to GnuPG and the surrounding ecosystem.  For

320             key discovery</a>, adopted a set
321             of <a href="https://gnupg.org/blog/20160921-python-bindings-for-gpgme.html">Python

323             to <a href="https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/">Enigmail</a>,

325             supported <a href="https://www.fsij.org/category/gnuk.html">the
326             Gnuk project</a>&mdash;a free source and free hardware

329             <strong>We want to continue this work in the long
330             term.</strong>  But, we want to do so in such a way that
331             our first loyalty is unambiguously to the general public.
332             This means making sure that a majority of our funding
333             comes from individual donors, and not corporations.
334             Further, to ensure long-term stability, our focus is on
335             recurring donations and not one-time donations.

337             <strong>Our primary goal is to get donation commitments
338               for 15&#x202f;000&nbsp;euros per month&mdash;enough to

354             tradeoffs, and common pitfalls; for digital security
355             trainers who need to understand GnuPG to be able to make
356             sound recommendations to users; and, of course,
357             for enthusiasts.

360             donations</strong>.  If 4000&nbsp;people donate just 5 or

362             team, and dedicate them to helping other projects in the
